Oh hey it’s back on my dash perfect! I was just thinking of this the other day!
OHOHOHO wow the Korean alphabet is awesome. The people who designed it were geniuses and were obviously incredibly schooled in the morphology and phonology of their language. HNNGGG

FUN FACT!
IT WASN’T JUST ANY OLD DUDE WHO DECIDED, “HEY I WANT TO CREATE A KOREAN ALPHABET.”
IT WAS KING SEJONG, WHO ORDERED HIS ROYAL SCHOLARS TO CREATE THIS ALPHABET SO READING AND WRITING COULD BE ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE, EVEN THE PEASANTS. IT WAS PURPOSELY DESIGNED TO BE EASY TO LEARN.
SO SHOUT OUT TO KING SEJONG, WHO REALIZED BEFORE MANY OTHERS THE IMPORTANCE OF UNIVERSAL LITERACY.
Me 10 years ago: I never use online abbreviations! standard english all the time!
Me a couple of years ago: u kno wat fuck it
Me now: it is impossible to communicate effectively online without using internet slang due to the mixed mode format and lack of paralinguistic features. Things like lack of punctuation, abbreviations, acronyms and such all have their own connotations and communicate far more than their commonly accepted meaning. Linguistics has evolved. n u kno what i love it
when people attack trans* ppl for “making up words” like genderqueer and etc, makes me wonder where they think words actually come from. is it god? does god make the words? or perhaps some sort of mischievous river spirit
as a linguistics major I can confirm that it is in fact a mischievous river spirit
Strange women lying in rivers distributing words is no basis for a system of language.
Supreme lexicographic power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
idk I just love how we Young People Today use ~improper~ punctuation/grammar in actually really defined ways to express tone without having to explicitly state tone like that’s just really fucking cool, like
no = “No,” she said.
no. = "No,” she said sharply.
No = “No,” she
stated
firmly.
No. = “No,” she snapped.
NO = “No!” she shouted.
noooooo = “No,” she moaned.
no~ = “No,” she said with a drawn-out sing-song.
~no~ = “No,” she drawled sarcastically.
NOOOOO = “No!” she screamed dramatically.
no?! = “No,” she said incredulously.
I’ve been calling this “typographical nuance” and I have a few more to add:
*no* = “No,” she said emphatically.
*nopes on out of here* = “No,” she said of herself in the third person, with a touch of humorous emphasis.
~*~noooo~*~ = “No,” she moaned in stylized pseudo-desperation.
#no = “No,” she added as a side comment.
“no” = “No,” she scare-quoted.
wtf are you kidding no = “No,” she said flatly. “And I can’t believe I have to say this.”
no no No No NO NO NO NO = "No,” she repeated over and over again, growing louder and more emphatic.
nooOOOO = “No,” she said, starting out quietly and turning into a scream.
*no = “Oops, I meant ‘no,’” she corrected, “Sorry for the typo in my previous message.”
i still love that tonks, the person whose special ability is suited best for spying, is clumsy as all shit and couldn’t sneak if her life depended on it. which it probably has
i love that tonks’ clumsiness isn’t some random harmless quirk but actually a totally realistic side effect of being a metamorphagus. like, the reason a lot of teenagers are clumsy is because even though their motor skills are well developed, they’re still growing. unless they participate in regular, disciplined physical activity like sports or gymnastics, their brain doesn’t really know how big they are. so teens drop shit, overbalance, trip on things, knock stuff over. they’re always a little bigger than they expected.
even though tonks probably gets plenty of exercise and training, and even if she undertook that training at a variety of different sizes to really be sure she could be effective regardless of shape, there’s no way for her brain to get used to what size she is on a casual, day-to-day basis. if she was being mindful— as in a firefight— she’d know to be specifically aware of where all her limbs are and how far they stretch, and she’s an active auror, so she must be competent at pursuit and combat. but most regular stuff like opening doors or getting out of a chair or picking up a cup you do on automatic— especially if you’re talking— and if you’re an inch taller than you were an hour ago, you’re going to totally wipe out.
so like, ironically, tonks would be a much better spy if her metamorphagus powers were strictly limited to cosmetic details like facial features. full-body changing ensures she can never use any body as well as someone who’s in one shape the whole time.
I love how humans have literally not changed throughout history like the graffiti from Pompeii has people from hundreds of years ago writing stuff like “Marcus is gay” “I fucked a girl here” “Julius your mum wishes she was with me” and leonardo da vinci’s assistants drew dicks in their notebooks just for the banter and mozart created a piece called “kiss my ass” so when people wish for ‘today’s generation’ to be like ‘how people used to’ then we’re already there buddy we’ve always been
The Hagia Sophia has inscriptions that were considered sacred for centuries until they were deciphered in the 70s to be Nordic runes saying “Halfdan wrote this”
my old english prof told us that theres a cave in Scandinavia where a viking gratified some runes like 14 feet up on the wall and when they finally reached it all it translated into was “this is very high”

‘People have literally just always been people’ is genuinely my favorite fact about the world
